DHHS Secretary Aldona Wos Tells Legislators that County and State Leaders Are Positioned to Reach USDA's March 31 Deadline

News Release

Raleigh, N.C.     DHHS Secretary Aldona Wos held a late afternoon conference call with legislators to provide an update on NC FAST regarding the status of compliance with the USDA standards for Food and Nutrition Services (food stamps).

"Once our first milestone on February 10 was met, we turned our attention to the March 31 deadline to bring all the FNS applications into full compliance," said Secretary Wos. "We are 12 days away, and as of today, the backlog in the counties is down to 1,044 cases. At this point, our county and state leaders expect that they will be able to meet this deadline."

While the deadline of March 31 appears to be achievable, Secretary Wos also stressed that efforts must be made to ensure sustainability for services going forward.

NC FAST (Families Accessing Services through Technology) is a tool that will improve the way social services are administered in North Carolina, enabling county case workers to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time assisting families. By the end of the planned 5-year rollout of the system, NC FAST will replace 19 legacy systems used to deliver social service benefits, including FNS (food stamps), Medicaid, Work First and child care services. NC FAST will improve the state's 100 county social service agencies' ability to track cases, share information and coordinate services to provide more efficient and effective customer service.
